			<description>&#60;p&#62;Interested in writing for the big screen?  Beginner’s Guide is an intensive evening course that demystifies the basics of screenwriting.  Over the four sessions, tutor Kathryn Burnett will take participants through the how and why of writing for film including premise, plot, story structure, formatting, dialogue, character and the visual grammar of screenplays.&#60;/p&#62;

&#60;p&#62;When: 6.30pm - 8.30pm Monday night.  Course starts 20 Sept 2010&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Where: Ponsonby Community Centre,  20 Ponsonby Terrace, Auckland&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Cost: $140.00 (gst incl) - bookings essential.  Numbers limited.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Bookings or further info contact: &#60;a href=&#34;mailto:kathryn.burnett@xtra.co.nz&#34;&#62;kathryn.burnett@xtra.co.nz&#60;/a&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;“Kathryn Burnett’s “Beginners Guide to Screenwriting Workshop” was a fascinating and valuable learning experience for participants of the intensive course recently held on the University of Waikato’s Tauranga campus; her vast knowledge of the screen industry, along with its requirements of the screenwriter, were effortlessly conveyed by her clear/dynamic tutoring style. As an adult community education coordinator of many years, I would rate Kathryn Burnett as one of the most dynamic tutors I have ever seen.  The evaluation forms from participants were full of praise for both the tutor and the relevance of her material; many told me personally that it was the best writing course that they had ever attended.”&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Nyree Sherlock - Adult Community Education Advisor (CCE, University of Waikato at Tauranga)&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;“As Head of Production and Development at South Seas I was responsible for contracting Kathryn to her position as Screenwriting Tutor, a position, which she held from 2003 – 2007. She adapted easily to a demanding role, lecturing and mentoring students in the script development of up to 35 x 10 -12 minute short films yearly for production - a tall order by any script development standards.  Her planning was impeccable and students loved her lectures, regularly rating them the most informative and interesting in their term evaluations.”  &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Paula Jones - Head of Faculty Production and Development (2000 – 2007)&#60;br /&#62;

			<title>Doublehappy on "Kiwi Short Film Makes headway overseas"</title>
			<link>http://www.script-to-screen.co.nz/forum/topic/kiwi-short-film-makes-headway-overseas#post-156</link>

			<description>&#60;p&#62;Kiwi short film Double Happy made headway overseas this week after being accepted into both the HOF (Home of Film) International Film Festival in Germany, and to the Montreal International Film Festival in Canada at the same time.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Trailer for Double Happy:&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;a href=&#34;http://bit.ly/brdw5J&#34; rel=&#34;nofollow&#34;&#62;http://bit.ly/brdw5J&#60;/a&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;‘It’s been a long road even getting the film made, so getting into these two festivals in the same week was a pretty great reward’ says director Shahir Daud, who has already made a name for himself locally and overseas after short films and music videos of his racked up over 2.5million hits on youtube! Shahir’s work has been featured on IAMTV, Campbell Live and French Television show Tracks&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Shahir's Showreel: &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.shahirdaud.com&#34; rel=&#34;nofollow&#34;&#62;http://www.shahirdaud.com&#60;/a&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Double Happy is a tense, dark retelling of a moment from Shahir’s childhood when a friend of his committed a terrible act of arson in a fit of rage.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;‘I was always pretty fascinated by why my friend did what he did. The more I thought about it, the more writing I did, the more apparent it became that he’d entirely misdirected his rage at the wrong person - and that in itself is pretty interesting, especially when you look at the way certain groups are&#60;br /&#62;
always scapegoated in New Zealand’&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Filming took place last April in Silverstream, Upper Hutt and involved the building of a school playground (which involved hauling two tonnes of playground equipment from Island Bay primary school!), redressing a fish and chip shop to look like a dairy, and subsequently setting fire to it.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;‘It was pretty crucial that we actually saw the fire and the result of his anger, but setting fire to anything is not a wise choice for a short film, the margin for error is pretty small’&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Luckily despite the frantic schedule, tiny budget and ambitious script, Double Happy was completed without incident and has become a remarkable, unflinching and poignant story of teenage rage. The story obviously resonated with film festival selectors overseas who’ve singled it out for screenings.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Double Happy will screen in Wellington once only as part of the Fringe Bar Short Film Evenings on Sunday the 15th of august at 6pm. $5 entry or $8 with popcorn and Jaffa’s.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;For more information about Double Happy, please contact Shivali Gulab (Producer) at (027) 444 1670 or &#60;a href=&#34;mailto:doublehappyfilm@gmail.com&#34;&#62;doublehappyfilm@gmail.com&#60;/a&#62;. Screening copies are available to view.&#60;/p&#62;

&#60;p&#62;Making Babies–And Raising Them&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Telling and developing our stories: The creative process meets practicality.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Auckland 7th August - Saint Columba Centre, 40 Vermont Street, Grey Lynn, Auckland&#60;br /&#62;
9am – 4pm&#60;br /&#62;
$30 (pay on the day)&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;This event is for all writers, novelists, screenwriters and for anyone who produces or publishes the work of writers.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Like all creative industries, the film industry is a collaboration between creativity and practicality. To succeed we need bold new ideas and strong understanding of how to develop those ideas. This full day workshop is intended to bring the two aspects together. The day will connect the free imagination with the need to nurture projects.&#60;br /&#62;

	To stimulate the creation of new ideas and good characters.&#60;br /&#62;
	To encourage lateral, original thought&#60;br /&#62;
	To analyse a screenplay and look at works practically.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The intention of this workshop is to get writers and producers together and thinking about their projects, finding ways to keep them creative but practical when it comes to development. &#60;/p&#62;

&#60;p&#62;PART TWO:  DEVELOPING YOUR STORIES&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The greatest story idea ever is still no good if it can’t be captured and communicated effectively to other filmmakers. Writers need the skills to grow their ideas with producers, directors, actors, accountants and audiences as well as on paper. To accomplish this a writer must be able to analyse their screenplay and use the development process as a practical and beneficial tool for the successful completion of their project. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Steve Barr recently moved to New Zealand after working for 16 years in the Hollywood system.
