New Zealand Writers Guild and New Zealand Film Commission presents…

Making Babies–And Raising Them

Telling and developing our stories: The creative process meets practicality.

Auckland 7th August - Saint Columba Centre, 40 Vermont Street, Grey Lynn, Auckland
9am – 4pm
$30 (pay on the day)

This event is for all writers, novelists, screenwriters and for anyone who produces or publishes the work of writers.

Like all creative industries, the film industry is a collaboration between creativity and practicality. To succeed we need bold new ideas and strong understanding of how to develop those ideas. This full day workshop is intended to bring the two aspects together. The day will connect the free imagination with the need to nurture projects.
	To stimulate fresh thoughts about existing projects.
	To stimulate the creation of new ideas and good characters.
	To encourage lateral, original thought
	To analyse a screenplay and look at works practically.

The intention of this workshop is to get writers and producers together and thinking about their projects, finding ways to keep them creative but practical when it comes to development.

PART ONE: BRAINSTORM BOOTCAMP

This 3 hour directed creativity workshop is a fun and intensive way to generate new ideas, stimulate new thought about old ideas and learn useful brainstorming techniques by doing.

Tutor Kathryn Burnett takes participants through a series of exercises (primarily written) that start simple and become progressively more complex.
They are designed to help creatives explore their story ideas whether they are new or already underway. The workshop is specifically designed to both invigorate and stretch creative thought process of writers, directors and producers.

Kathryn Burnett is a screenwriter, playwright, script editor and development consultant who has worked primarily in film and television for over 15 years. In addition to writing her next play, Kathryn has a horror script in development, is working as a script consultant and running her BrainStorm classes and workshops.

PART TWO: DEVELOPING YOUR STORIES

The greatest story idea ever is still no good if it can’t be captured and communicated effectively to other filmmakers. Writers need the skills to grow their ideas with producers, directors, actors, accountants and audiences as well as on paper. To accomplish this a writer must be able to analyse their screenplay and use the development process as a practical and beneficial tool for the successful completion of their project.

Steve Barr recently moved to New Zealand after working for 16 years in the Hollywood system. He has been a post-production scheduler and studio "suit" for Universal Studios, a development executive for indie financier SMASHfilms, and a feature screenwriter for Walt Disney Pictures. He has written professional analysis on over 1000 screenplays, and has the scars to prove it.

*To register for this event please email steven@nzwritersguild.org.nz

Hi,

People might like to watch this short interview with Keith Aberdeine http://screentalk.nzonscreen.com/interviews/keith-aberdein-scripting-nz-classics

He's probably best known for portraying the small-town policeman who arouses Bruno Lawrence's ire, in Kiwi screen classic Smash Palace, but his screen work covers almost every angle: from journalism and directing, to writing scripts for some of the most ambitious television dramas of the 70s

The interview ends, “If I had any contribution [to make]: I stood there and made a living out of something no one had really made a living out of before. And I did it mostly by craft and few cunning tricks ... If anything, if anybody was watching (and I was surprised if anyone was) I said this is possible... there will be tears and you’ll get kicked kicked in the head a bit, but this is possible and it also can also be bloody good fun!”

His screen career began as a journalist on Town and Around and Compass. Aberdein has scripted major TV shows such as Pukemanu, Section 7,Moynihan, Close to Home, and the colonial epic The Governor.

The ScreenTalk interview touches on:

Why prolonging an interview with a survivor of the Wahine disaster still makes him shudder
The challenges of making Pukemanu and how the programme changed the face of drama on TV
The deliberate revisionism of history and Governor Grey in scripting The Governor
The negative and positive impact the programme had on TV in New Zealand
How Close to Home won the ratings battle for TV One against SPTV
Working on the script for Utu with Geoff Murphy
Writing a scathing script review of Smash Palace and how director Roger Donaldson got his own back when he cast him in the film
How making a career in TV can be fun, but will lead to tears

Entries for 2010 round of short film production now open
Short Film Otago is now calling for entries in its 2010 round of production. Entries will close on Monday 9 August 2010.

The call for entries coincides with the launch of a new website which highlights the films made to date through Short Film Otago.

Over the past 3 years, Short Film Otago has produced 6 films which can now all be viewed online at http://www.sfo.org.nz. Two of these, “Paradise” (in 2009) and “Eden” (in 2010), have been accepted for showing at the New Zealand International Film Festival.
Short Film Otago is a registered charitable trust, funded by the Otago Community Trust. It’s mission is to generate well written and edited scripts, and then over-see full production on two or three of the best scripts each year.

Entries are open to anyone in the Otago region or who has a strong connection to the region. The written concepts can be fully finished scripts, or one-page outlines, or works in-between. The scripts themselves must be strong, original stories that are visually interesting and have an ideal length of ten to fifteen minutes.
When entries close the SFO Board read the submitted projects then meet to discuss them.
The number of projects is reduced to a short list of 4 to 6, and the writers of these scripts are paired with script editors to work on the next draft or drafts. The writers and editors are paid for this process, which has a deadline.
After this process, the SFO board again reads the scripts, and they are reduced to the final 2 or 3 which will go into production.

Each production is assigned an experienced Executive Producer, with a solid industry background, who may continue to work on the script with the writer.

A team is assembled for each production. A call will go out for crew through the SFO website, and through other industry sites/email groups; also the EP may approach people whom they think would be a good Producer or Director for the project.

More information about the initiative is available on the web-site http://www.sfo.org.nz or by email on contact@sfo.org.nz

For any further information about Short Film Otago please contact Judith Curran 027 235 8794, Stephen Downes 021 174 9411 or Katie Brockie 021 188 1282.

Kia Ora Filmmakers,

The NZ Film Commission is pleased to announce the introduction of a new low budget short film scheme and some changes to the existing Short Film Fund.

Fresh Shorts is a new low budget short film scheme run in-house by the NZ Film Commission. It aims to identify the next generation of New Zealand feature filmmakers by nurturing and inspiring up-and-coming talent.

Fresh Shorts are:

Fresh, new directorial voices with distinctive, original styles.
Fresh ideas not seen before in short film, or new and original takes on familiar ideas.
Cinematic - ideas that deserve to be on the big screen.
Narrative films with impact. They could be emotional, humorous or political, or designed to scare an audience. The films should aim to reach audiences and move them.
Films that take risks, provoke and challenge audiences. Films that have something to say.

We’re looking for the next generation of up-and-coming feature filmmaking talent, so your short film idea should be a reflection of you; a film only you can make.

Fresh Shorts will support the following once a year:

Up to eight narrative short films at $10,000 per film
Up to eight narrative short films at $30,000 per film

The level of funding will be based on the director’s experience.

Applications will open on Wednesday July 28, 2010 and close on Friday October 8, 2010

Please see the website http://nzfilm.co.nz/fresh-shorts/ for more details about the scheme including the Fresh Shorts criteria and application information.

The existing Short Film Fund Executive Producer Scheme is to be renamed Premiere Shorts.

Premiere Shorts will support six narrative short films at $90,000 per film in the 2010/2011 financial year. Premiere Shorts films will be selected and overseen by Executive Producer groups, who will select two narrative short films each.

The new Premiere Shorts Executive Producer Groups for 2010/2011 are:
A Collective intake of Breath
Maile Daugherty, Michael Bennett

Tom Thumb Shorts

The Premiere Shorts criteria for each Executive Producer Group will be available on the NZ Film Commission website by Friday 23 July, 2010 at http://nzfilm.co.nz/premiere-shorts/

Hello,

NZ On Screen has launched its first collection of short films. This selection is the first in a series - in partnership with the NZ Film Commission - showcasing choice, award-winning examples of Kiwi short filmmaking. If you take this link --- http://www.nzonscreen.com/collection/nz-short-film-collection --- the movies can be watched online, for free. Some of them are only available for a few weeks, so please help spread the word. Feel free to use links for websites, newsletters, etc

Thanks,

Deb Diaz, for NZ On Screen

· Kitchen Sink Short Film, 1989 (Full Length) Alison Maclean’s surreal suburban nightmare burst onto the international scene with the same impact as the hairy monster from the plughole in the film. Starring Theresa Healey, the black and white horror debuted in Cannes and is arguably the most successful short film to come from NZ. Classic.
· The Lounge Bar Short Film, 1988 (Full Length) The zenith of Don McGlashan and Harry Sinclair’s legendary Front Lawn collaborations, this iconic Kiwi short follows two men and one woman on a rainy night at a deserted bar. Pivoting on amnesia and woven together by music, two timeframes seamlessly combine as a darkly humorous plot unfolds.O Tamaiti
· Short Film, 1996 (Full Length) Sima Urale’s debut short, beautifully realised in black and white, tells the immigrant story of a young Samoan boy who is expected to play guardian to his siblings. Poignant attention to details that convey children’s perspectives saw O Tamaiti win the prestigious Silver Lion at Venice.
· Fog Short Film, 2007 (Full Length) Shy Ricky and extrovert Tilly commandeer Ricky’s father’s fishing boat to find freedom in the fog. Oppression, boredom and sex — the cultural trinity of the NZ small town (here, isolated fishing village Ngawi) — is evoked by director Peter Salmon. Fog was selected for Critics’ Week at Cannes.
· Despondent Divorcee Short Film, 1995 (Full Length) In competition at Cannes 1995, Jonathan Ogilvie short takes its title from a shocking 1942 photograph of a suicidal woman plummeting to her death. Photo close-ups overdubbed with a beguiling noir-ish narration brilliantly channel the chill detachment the photographer required to get his shot.
· Nothing Special Short Film, 2004 (Full Length) Written by Helena Brooks and comedian Jaquie Brown, Nothing Special is something of a cautionary tale: it’s good to love your son, but less good to think he’s Jesus reincarnate! Winning performances and music (Blerta’s ‘Dance All Around The World’) saw it chosen for competition at Cannes (2005).
· Nature's Way Short Film, 2006 (Full Length) A young girl is murdered and her body dumped in the forest. Jane Shearer’s haunting Cannes-nominated tale of utu on the suburban fringe, sees the dense native bush pass down its judgement on the killer (played with itchy paranoia by Matthew Sunderland) who struggles to get away with it.
· Closer Short Film, 2004 (Full Length) Closer is the story of a deaf teenage boy trying to come to terms with the death of his older sister. Written and directed by David Rittey, and co-written by poet Therese Lloyd, it won Best Short Film, and Performance at the 2005 NZ Screen Awards; and was selected in competition at Cannes.
· Cow Short Film, 2001 (Full Length) In Michael Bennett’s surreal short, two old minstrels (NZ screen legends Ian Mune and Martyn Sanderson) are adrift in the ocean, a placid Friesian cow in tow; bovine bliss dries up as a guitar duet escalates to a duel. Cannes-selected Cow won Best Short Film Script at the NZ Film Awards.
· Turangawaewae / A Place to Stand Short Film, 2003 (Full Length) Actor Wi Kuki Kaa plays a Vietnam War veteran who is dislocated by his war experience and homeless. Directed by Peter Burger, this moving short about a man jolted to find his turangawaewae and the whānau that helps him get there, was selected for Critics' Week at Cannes.
· Boy Short Film, 2004 (Full Length) A teen rent boy exposes the truth about the death of a girl in a hit and run accident. Using typography in place of dialogue, flares of bold colour, dioramic frames, and brutal portraiture, director Welby Ings’ film is an exquisite, boldly original take on small town claustrophobia and violence.
· Truant Short Film, 2005 (Full Length) Set in gritty downtown Auckland’s backstreets, this short follows the vicissitudes of Evan, a teenager who skips school and meets a beautiful, troubled stranger. Capturing a teen mix of curiosity and desperation, Truant screened at a number of festivals including London and Clermont Ferrand.

New Zealand Writers Guild and New Zealand Film Commission presents…

Making Babies – And Selling Them

Telling and selling our stories: The creative process and the commercial imperative.

Christchurch 24th July - Dunedin 25th July
$30 (pay on the day)

To register for this event please email steven@nzwritersguild.org.nz

This event is for all writers, novelists, screenwriters and for anyone who produces or publishes the work of writers.

Like all creative industries, the film industry is a collaboration between the creative and the commercial. To succeed we need bold new ideas and strong understanding of how to get those ideas out into the real world. This full day workshop is intended to bring the two aspects together. The day will connect the free imagination with the need to understand audience.
	To stimulate fresh thoughts about existing projects.
	To stimulate the creation of new ideas.
	To encourage lateral, original thought
	To exercise creative and commercial muscle.

The intention of this workshop is to get writers and producers together and thinking about the creative and commercial aspects of their projects in a cohesive and synergetic way.

PART TWO: Selling your stories: Understanding the core elements of your project.

Writers pitch to producers who pitch to funders and distributors who pitch to the public. The effective selling of stories is vital to all creative industries.

The Logline, the Elevator Pitch, the Sales Pitch, and the Adaptation Pitch: each kind of pitch has its own set of rules and techniques, and each can be the difference between moving to the next step and a polite "thanks, but it's not for me."
What are the core strengths of a project? What will bring an audience to the film? These elements need to be known before the script can be completed.

To register for this event please email steven@nzwritersguild.org.nz

An Open Letter to the Hon Chris Finlayson, MP, Minister For Arts, Culture & Heritage and Graeme Mason CEO, New Zealand Film Commission

Dear Messrs Finlayson and Mason,

They say the squeaky wheel gets the oil.

Now I do understand that you both are in the midst of processing the eighty-seven page review of the New Zealand Film Commission by Sir Peter Jackson and David Court and that you may be pressed for time to peruse any additional material relating to the review.

So let me keep this brief and to get right to the point.

The indepth Review covered many areas for potential improvement to the New Zealand film landscape and featured many common sense applicable solutions to existing problems. However one theme that appeared to pop up throughout the review was the need to find and nurture the next generation of filmmaking talent.

The review makes special mention of the annual V48HOURS event, cutting directly to the heart of the matter with;

"The NZFC should already have an idea about who the exciting young film makers are – who’s winning the film competitions, who submitted the most imaginative films to ‘48 Hours’"

Before that fully sinks in, the review follows up with this slamdunk;

"The NZFC could have a stronger role in nationwide film contests like the ‘48 hours’ competition."

Which in a somewhat selfish analysis could mean that the event (self-described as a nationwide talent incubator) needs to be better supported. The event continues to grow each year yet unfortunately struggles to survive on the goodwill of sponsors (all the lovely logos below) and the competitors themselves. The event has grown exponentially for eight years since it started in 2003 with just 44 teams and one cinema. This year over ten thousand people participated and flocked into cinemas nationwide, while others watched the network television series and finally even more viewed films online.

At its core, the V48HOURS answers all the Parliamentary functions required of the NZFC which are, ‘to encourage and also to participate and assist in the making, promotion, distribution and exhibition of films’. - something the V48HOURS does very well in cinemas, TV, online and DVD to large NZ audiences every year.

At present it appears the NZFC is hamstrung by existing funding guidelines as the V48HOURS falls under the "Festivals & Awards Programme', which means it's seen on par with the Wellington Fringe Film Festival. No offense to the Fringe but the two organisations are on completely different playing fields in terms of what they achieve in the industry.

Those guidline restrictions make it appear that the NZFC are failing to support the infrastructure and success that the V48HOURS has built over 8 years.

More than $1,000,000 is spent on Industry Support alone by the NZFC each year. The V48HOURS which the Review has stated is the entity where future talent is being discovered, receives $0.00 from NZFC Industry Support funding.

The NZFC Statement of Intent says one of its primary goals looking forward was to "Build a Talent Pathway in 08/09" and directed nearly $5,000,000 towards this 'Pathway'. Surprisingly the event that inspired more New Zealanders to create film in that period than any other entity received only $5000 operational support. Which leads one to ask if the allocated monies (non production) that are already set aside for establishing the next generation of filmmakers are actually being utilised in the most forward-thinking way.

But then again, I would say that wouldn’t I?

Sincerely,

Ant TIMPSON
Director V48HOURS.

Entertaining and engaging, this is a workshop that will give you the tools and inspiration to take your writing to the next level.

Nick Ward broke into feature screenwriting with pool comedy Stickmen. An instant Kiwi hit, Stickmen won Ward a 2001 NZ Film and TV Award for best script. He went on to originate and co-write the script for hit romance Second-Hand Wedding, and pen episodes of TV series Outrageous Fortune and Burying Brian.

11am Coffee

11.15am Fiona Samuel, Dianne Taylor, Peter Cox – Inspiration, Motivation and finding the Next Draft.

How do you find focus in the development process? What feedback is helpful? What makes a new draft stronger than the previous and how do you identify this?

Fiona Samuel is one of those talents who has worked prolifically across so many fields, she defies labels: she has worked variously as an actor on stage and screen (Stroke, Lemming Aid), playwright (The Wedding Party), director (TV movies Piece of my Heart, Home Movie), singer (musical revue Babes in the Mood) and scriptwriter (Outrageous Fortune).

Peter Cox has worked on a number of television and theatre projects over the last ten years. After writing for theatre in Wellington, and winning the Chapman Tripp Award for Best New Playwright in 2002, he went on to create and write for the television show The Insider’s Guide to Happiness, which was produced by Gibson Group in 2003. The series went on to win numerous awards at the Air NZ television awards including best series.

Dianne Taylor has made a living as a full-time writer since she was eighteen. After a career in advertising, Dianne studied at the University of Auckland, graduating with a degree in Film and English. Dianne’s screenwriting projects have included feature films, shorts, and award-winning educational dramas on diabetes prevention and methamphetamine abuse.
Most recently, Dianne co-wrote the feature film Apron Strings which premiered on the opening night of The New Zealand International Film Festival in Auckland in July 2008

2.00pm Steven Barr - The Many Pitches Of A Screenwriter - Understanding the core elements of your script.

The Logline, the Elevator Pitch, the Sales Pitch, and the Adaptation Pitch: each kind of pitch has its own set of rules and techniques, and each can be the difference between moving to the next step and a polite "thanks, but it's not for me."

See you there,
We have received a wealth of strong filmmaking ideas explicitly conceived with low budget production in mind. I am looking forward to seeing how the teams develop their ideas through boot camp, and like everyone else, am excited to see which four films get green lit.”

Escalator was launched in February this year. New applications for Escalator will next be sought in March 2011. Some general observations and thoughts, which may assist film makers with their future submissions, can be viewed on our website http://www.nzfilm.co.nz/escalator
