Leo leaves for New York in March 2009 where he will spend three months as an intern in the script development department of Killer Films, a company at the forefront of independent American cinema.  Killer Films, led by producers Christina Vachon and Pam Koffler, has made a number of very successful and much talked-about features including Kids, Happiness, and Oscar nominated Far from Heaven.

Leo’s first short film, Cargo, was self-funded on a budget of only eight thousand dollars before attracting additional help with post-production from the New Zealand Film Commission.  Cargo has since been invited to screen at Venice, London’s BFI, Tribeca, Paris, Prague and Melbourne.

The internship selection panel of Roger Horrocks, Fiona Copland and Hone Kouka described Leo as “a talented writer/director with great potential.” They added: “His film Cargo is a very sophisticated piece of work for someone still at an early stage in his career. Film is an international industry so it is important to give our film-makers the opportunity to expand their overseas experience, and thanks to Killer Films and the sponsors of the internship, Leo will get some first-hand experience of the American independent industry.”

The panel was also very impressed by the general quality of the applicants: “It was a tough decision. It’s great to see so much new talent coming through our industry.”

Script to Screen would like to thank Stella Artois and The Film Investment Corporation Foundation for their generous support, without whom the 2008 US Screenwriting Scholarship would not have been possible.
